I chose Jerry Seinfeld, a stand up comedian and sitcom actor for my
project. He was the writer, executive producer and actor in “Seinfeld”an
American TV sitcom.
I liked Jerry Seinfeld because he is funny and hilarious in his show. I especially like the type of comedy he used –the observational comedy. The humor in his work is usually based upon simple events in our daily life and awkward uncomfortable social duties. The critics and the creators of the show labeled the sitcom as “show about nothing”. One of the episodes in the second season was “The Chinese Restaurant”. The whole episode was based upon the
interactions and exchanges between Jerry Seinfeld and his friends when they were
waiting for table in a Chinese restaurant. Another episode in the third season was
“The Parking Garage” where Jerry and his friends spent the episode looking for
their parked car in a parking garage.
Entertainment weekly ranked “Seinfeld” as the 3rd best TV show of all time. As result of the popularity of the show the quotes from Seinfeld’s work have became part of the popular culture. For example, George Costanza in Seinfeld said “Jerry, just remember, it’s not a lie if you believe it”. The New York Times commented that the final episode of Seinfeld was hilarious and the best. The New York Times called the main characters of Seinfeld “The New York Four”.
Jerry Seinfeld was born on April 29, 1954 in Brooklyn, New York. He is currently 58 years old. His father, Kalmen Seinfeld was of Austrian Jewish background and was a sign maker. His mother Betty Seinfeld is of Syrian Jewish descent. Seinfeld grew up in Massapequa, New York. He went to SUNY Oswego college and after his sophomore year he transferred to Queens College. He graduated from University of New York with a degree in communications and theater. Seinfeld developed an interest in stand - up comedy in college productions. When he graduated from college, he tried out an open - mic night at New York City's Catch a Rising Star. In May 1981, Seinfeld made a successful appearance on the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, impressing Carson and the audience and leading to regular appearances on that show and others, including Late Nate with David Letterman.
Jerry Seinfeld created the Seinfeld Chronicles with Larry David on 1989 for NBC. The show was later renamed Seinfeld to avoid the confusion of the sitcom The Marshall Chronicles and, by its fourth season, had become the most popular and succesful sitcom on American television. The final episode aired in 1998. Seinfeld has said that his show was influenced by the 1950s sitcom The Abbott and Costello Show. After his sitcom ended, Seinfeld returned to stand - up comedy instead of pursuing a film career.
In the late 1990s, Seinfeld was in the commerical of Apple Computer. In 2004, Seinfeld also appeared in the commercial of American Express. Seinfeld appeared at Saturday Night Live on May 13, 2006. On February 25, 2007, Seinfeld appeared at the 79th Academy Awards as the presenter for "Best Documentary". Before announcing the nominations, he did a bit of a stand up - comedy. Seinfeld appeared as the voice of his Bee Movie animated character Barry on 2008. On February of that year, he appeared at the 80th Academy Awards as the presenter for "Best Animated Short". In March 2009, it was announced that Jerry Seinfeld and the entire cast of Seinfeld would be appearing in Larry David's HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm.
